A native of Brooklyn, NY, Countess served with the 1st Infantry Division, 26th Regiment, Company B in North Africa during World War II. A recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart, Countess is also the author of the book Letters from the Battlefield in Love & War.
