Episode #689 of Hometown Heroes, airing July 10-15, 2021, coincides with the 78th anniversary of the launch of Operation Husky, the 1943 invasion of Sicily.

The six-week battle for Sicily involved nearly 500,000 troops from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

You’ll hear the memories of five veterans from five different states who took part in that substantial effort, which paved the way for the subsequent invasion of Italy, as well as the Normandy landings nearly a year later. Jerry Countess, a native of Brooklyn, NY, participated in the Sicily landings with the 1st Infantry Division. You’ll hear this recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart detail what he considered his closest call of World War II, an incident that unfolded on a Sicilian mountainside.
