Episode #514 of Hometown Heroes, airing March 9-11, 2018, focuses on this week’s discovery of the U.S.S. Lexington (CV-2), nearly 76 years after the aircraft carrier was sunk in the Battle of the Coral Sea.

One of the U.S.S. Lexington’s anti-aircraft guns, as found 76 years after the ship’s sinking.

The crew of the R/V Petrel, a research vessel in the employ of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, located the Lexington roughly two miles deep in the Coral Sea, on March 4, 2018. The find comes a little more than six months after the Petrel discovered the wreckage of the cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis.

“To pay tribute to the USS Lexington and the brave men who served on her is an honor,” Allen said in a news release. “As Americans, all of us owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who served and who continue to serve our country for their courage, persistence, and sacrifice.”

News of the discovery came as quite a shock to U.S.S. Lexington survivor Gordon Scott, who first shared his story on Hometown Heroes on episode #321 in 2014.

“When I heard the news, I absolutely couldn’t believe it,” you’ll hear Scott explain. “This Paul Allen that’s funded this deal, for doing this, is unbelievable.”
