Episode #523 of Hometown Heroes marks Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-13, 2018, by focusing on the role played by women during World War II. More than 350,000 American women served in the Armed Forces during the war, and millions more found other ways to contribute to the war effort.

You’ll hear Susan Hohn explain why she didn’t grasp the significance of her late mother’s WASP service until after passing.

First we hear from Susan Hohn, whose late mother, Hazel, was one of nearly 1,100 women to complete training as Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during World War II. Later, we meet 91-year-old Joan Petrone and her daughter, Anna. Joan toured France, Germany, and Japan as a USO dancer at the end of the war.
