Episode #743 of Hometown Heroes, airing July 22-25, 2022, served as a tribute to ex-Prisoner of War Dean Whitaker, who passed away July 14th at the age of 97. A southern California native who grew up in Maywood, Whitaker became a fixture in the veterans community of Las Vegas, NV, amazing and inspiring audiences with his story of survival from World War II.

In addition to excerpts from Whitaker’s story as he first shared with Hometown Heroes in 2011, you’ll hear from Belinda Morse with Honor Flight Southern Nevada, an organization which greatly enriched Whitaker’s final years. You’ll hear Whitaker’s memories of December 7th, 1941, and how he found out the United States had been attacked, as well as how he ended up in the Army Air Corps.

    How beautiful to hear his (young) voice again. This man touched my life, my Girl Scout troop and that of my family. Grateful for the blessing to know him these last few years-all due to Honor Flight Southern Nevada. God Speed Mr Dean. We will continue to share your story.
